The $118 million-revenue Internet Society has absorbed a much smaller nonprofit dedicated to increasing consumer confidence in online purchases.
The Online Trust Alliance announced Wednesday it has become an initiative of the Internet Society. The formerly independent OTA was a $620,000-revenue group in Bellevue, Wash., formed in 2005 by several software companies in the business of providing online ecommerce solutions. The Association for Competitive Technology and National Association of Realtors are among the group's current members.
"OTA and ISOC are excited to join forces in order to improve online trust, enhance data security, promote responsible privacy practices, and bolster the development and use of an open Internet," OTA President and Executive Director Craig Spiezle said in a statement.
"By working together, OTA's vision and mission will be sustained and amplified with the resources, reach and stature of the Internet Society."
The Internet Society is a Reston, Va.-based group that advocates for public policy, develops standards and provides networking and education events for professionals. The group has more than 110 organizational members and 122 chapters around the world.
"Now is the right time for these two organizations to come together to help build user trust in the Internet," Internet Society CEO Kathryn Brown said. "At a time when cyberattacks and identity theft are on the rise, this partnership will help improve security and data privacy for users." http://bit.ly/2nY10Xe
